It appears that Olive Boyle has bullied her way onto the Library Board of Brian Creek, but she has much bigger plans. Is it possible that she see the mayor’s office in her future? After publically threatening Lindsay’s job and vowing to reveal another employee’s secrets, Olive’s true plans will never come to fruition when she is found stabbed to death at the annual Dinner in the Stacks fundraiser.
Since Lindsay Norris seems to be the mother hen of Briar Creek, she will not let threats go unchallenged and though she has promised never to get in the middle of another murder investigation, she has no choice when Paula Turner becomes the main suspect. No one can figure out why Olive took an immediate dislike to Paula or why Olive took it as her duty to know the secrets of anyone that stood in her way. Only this time, it seems that her own secrets and manipulations have backfired in a deadly way.
Author Jenn McKinlay was playing a game of throwing everything onto the wall to see what would stick, and leading the reader down multiple paths, none of which prepared them for the conclusion. The reason behind Olive’s murder gets a bit convoluted and does not play out in a way that the story seemingly had been leading to, leaving the reader with a somewhat out of left field feel.
