From the description, “A Spell of Trouble” sounds like it would be an automatic go-to for me. A cozy mystery complete with returning home to a small town and an animal companion, add in a bit of mystical and the book should have been a home run.

Unfortunately, Aleksandra “Alex” Daniels is dull and the town of Bellamy Bay, North Carolina, complete with mermaids, water witches, and a family business of an herbal apothecary remained flat. Now, with two deaths and Alex’s Aunt Lidia to blame for the first, Alex finds herself in the middle of an investigation while at the same time learning of her family history, the truth surrounding her mother’s death, her burgeoning talents, and a wish to return to the city and her safe life.

Esme Addison did try to spice it up with two separate suitors for Alex but they too provided no spark. There is a bit of stretching and a little “who is that again”, but for the most part, this was a forgettable entry into a new series.
